September 10th, 2024

In our Guest Editor series, we tap some of our favorite creators, entrepreneurs, and tastemakers to share their stories and style. This month’s feature: Mary Glenn McElveen, the Birmingham, AL-based closet curator and fashion stylist behind MG Style.

Meet The Editor

Mary Glenn works with women who want to define their style and simplify their closet. She’s a fashion stylist by trade but has found her specialty in closet curation. In her process, she meets with clients to clean out old clothes, style outfits with what they have, and fill gaps with what they need. As a stylist, she’s inspired by all her surroundings, whether it be travel, Pinterest, or her latest internet find. She’ll dress you for your next vacation, special occasion, or everyday—and even if you’re not a client, her Instagram @m.g._style has all the inspiration you need.

The Summer-to-Fall
Transition Outfit

“I was immediately drawn to this print because of its browns and blues—I’m seeing these shades everywhere. The cardigan complements the colors but isn’t a perfect match, which I actually prefer when styling.”

The Core Essentials

“I feel my best when I stick to classics. My core essentials are a great pair of jeans, a button down shirt, a reliable pair of flats, and belts.”

“I find inspiration everywhere and look up to so many icons. A few of my favorites are Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, Victoria Beckham, and Sofia Richie Grainge.”

How to Refresh Your Closet for a New Season

MG’s three-step method for a curated capsule wardrobe.

If You’re On The Fence, Toss It

“If you are on the fence about something, see if you can style it in an outfit. If you can't, you don't need it in your wardrobe!”

Refresh Your Essentials

“Keep your core essential piece. If they are worn down, toss and replace.”

Evaluate Every Season

“I'm lucky that I can edit my wardrobe quickly because I know my style. A good rule of thumb is to evaluate your wardrobe at the end of each season.”

MG’s Test: Do You Need It or Not?

1. WEAR AND TEAR
If it has holes, old stains, or pilling that will prevent you from wearing it, toss it.

2. STYLE

If a piece is not in style anymore, it needs to go.

3. OUT OF SIGHT
If you bought something years ago and have not worn it in the last year, it needs to go (unless you can style it in a new way).

“I'm guilty of breaking most fashion rules. I mix black with brown, gold with silver, prints and patterns— the list goes on!”
