Located at 23 Centre Street, A Sailor’s Valentine by Tuckernuck is a jewel box celebrating chic Americana style and a fun, full life. At less than 500 square feet, every inch is thoughtfully designed, from the curated collection to shell-covered walls that make you feel as though you’ve stepped inside a sailor’s valentine.

The Story Behind the Name
Historically, sailors’ valentines were keepsakes made of seashells in the 1800s, given by sailors to loved ones upon returning from long sea voyages. Often, these intricate mosaics included a sentimental message or motto. Today, sailors’ valentines have become a symbol of Nantucket and a treasured memento collected by many, including our CEO Jocelyn.
Shell It Out
To create this shell-encrusted grotto, the founders, creative director of home Tori Mellott, and display artist Callender Baker worked their magic. With a team of artisans, Callender hand-glued more than 40,000 shells across 25 varieties—including cowries, abalone, scallops, and whelks—to the ceiling and walls painted in Farrow & Ball’s Belvedere Blue, a color that matches back to a sailor’s valentine from Jocelyn’s personal collection. The process took over 250 hours to complete.

What's in Store
Curated for East Coast summers, the store is stocked with everything from cotton sweaters and easy dinner dresses to raffia accessories and shell-clad treasures. It’s designed to be a place where you can pick up something you left at home or find a keepsake you can’t live without.
One of a Kind: Tuckernuck Vintage
Inspired by the thrill of discovering hidden gems while traveling, the store features vintage finds sourced by the founders and Tuckernuck’s fashion and home directors. From bespoke Bakelite bangles to nautical glassware, the one-of-a-kind assortment includes jewelry, handbags, and home treasures.
From Nantucket, With Love
The phrase, “When this you sea, remember me,” sits at the heart of the store—a reminder to take a little piece of Nantucket with you when you leave. It’s a fitting tribute to the island that inspired Tuckernuck, where September, Maddy, and Jocelyn first dreamed of bringing its bespoke shopping experience online in 2014.
