What is the difference between a sweater and sweatshirt?
Women's sweaters are commonly worn for dressy occasions that make going from busy work days to date nights a breeze. Sweaters tend to be heavier in weight, have a tailored silhouette, and are made in various patterns such as argyle or cable knit. They also have a defined neckline—think V-neck, crewneck, and turtleneck. The closet staple is typically made from finer materials like cashmere, cotton, and wool. Sweaters are great to style under jackets, over button downs, and with trousers or skirts.
Sweatshirts are commonly worn and styled for informal, relaxed days or sport outings. Think of things like running errands on the weekend or playing tennis on a chilly day. Sweatshirts are typically made of cotton or other materials that make them lightweight and machine washable, and are normally designed with a crewneck neckline. The loose, pullover style makes for better airflow, keeping you cool, and for easy movement while you wear it. While this layer could have patterns that mimic sweaters, they normally will feature a graphic or a logo, but solid color sweatshirts are also popular. Sweatshirts can be designed in a hoodie silhouette, with or without a front pocket. Sweatshirts are great to style under sport jackets, over t-shirts, or with leggings and sneakers.
