The Hydra Look

Bohemian, effortless, cool, unfussy. It’s a resort and summer-focused island, so lean into your vacation wardrobe and pack lightweight dresses, linen pants, caftans, and swimsuits. The island attracts a lot of creatives, so channel the artful vibe with beaded necklaces, bangles, and leather sandals.

Getting There

Fly into Athens, then take a ~45-minute taxi to Piraeus port. From there, catch a 1.5-hour ferry to Hydra. The island has no cars, so be prepared to walk with your luggage. Stay near Piraeus if you want to be near restaurants and shops and avoid hilly walks. For island hopping, we recommend Syros, Milos, or Paros.

Find the Fun in Hydra

See Some Art

The Old Carpet Factory houses a recording studio and artist residencies, and the Deste Foundation Project Space (open June–October) features Apollo, Jeff Koons’ iconic island landmark.

Go for a Hike

Take in views along the path to Mandraki Beach. Wear supportive shoes since there are steep hills and lots of stairs.

Jump in the Water

The best swimming spot is Spilia Beach, where we shot a scene for our Summer Lifestyle Guide.

Enjoy Local Food

Don’t miss Piato for lunch or dinner—and the chance to paint your own plate and leave your mark on the island.

Where to Stay

Boutique stays that are small in size but rich in history and hospitality.

Cotommotae Hotel

Originally the mansion of the local maritime Cotommatae family, this hotel has only five suites, each uniquely named and decorated with a bygone feel. Enjoy views of the town, a short walk from the port, and complimentary breakfast.

Orloff Hotel

Built in the 1790s, the Orloff still has some antique pieces from its original owners. It feels homey, has an outdoor patio, and is surrounded by lemon trees. A quick walk from the port and complimentary breakfast included!

Where to Eat and Drink

Traditional Greek cuisine, fresh catches,
and local wine.

Croissant

Located off the main port, this is a go-to for coffee and cinnamon rolls, croissants, or granola bars. Order a freddo cappuccino— delicious with frothed milk.

Piato

Stop here for lunch or dinner and to see the hand-drawn plates on the wall. Ask for a plate and markers to leave your mark on Hydra. We made a Tuckernuck plate!

Isalos

A fun spot on the port to sip Aperol spritzes and share charcuterie boards as you watch the sunset.

Omilos

Right on the ocean, this restaurant has beautiful indoor and outdoor seating, and amazing local dishes including Greek salad and fresh seafood. Order the spaghetti with clams!

Xeria Elia - Doukos

One of the oldest taverns in Hydra, with a large olive tree—its trademark—in the center of its courtyard. Come for the fresh, family-style food, stay for the ambiance and frequent live music.

Windmill

Set in and around restored 18th-century windmills, this is a destination to stop for cocktails and watch the sunset.

Where to Shop

Harborfront boutiques that feel more like treasure hunting than souvenir shopping.

Turquoise

This beautiful store has a lovely selection of printed pareos, bandanas, and table linens, and all things colorful. A great spot to shop for yourself and gifts to bring back home.

Koutsikou

A cabinet of curiosities. Right on the port, this boutique is full of treasures to discover for your home and closet.
