The Thanksgiving Edit: Outfit Inspiration for a Week at Home
When you’re heading home for the holidays, you don’t want to worry about what to wear. Here, every outfit you actually need to plan for, according to our senior fashion and lifestyle director Shallon Hunter Manion.
Whether you’re just-out-of-college hitting the bars or inviting girlfriends over for a glass of wine, the night before Thanksgiving is about spending quality time with old friends. Dress the part in a retro-inspired sweater paired with timeless trousers, velvet pumps, and our new favorite statement earring: an over-sized stud.
style tip
Mixing textures is an easy way to make any outfit more interesting. Think satin, velvet, and hints of metallic with your knitwear and jewelry.
If you’re part of a Turkey Trot family (or you married into one!), lean into the holiday theme with a workout set in of-the-moment chocolate. It’s a fun take on a monochromatic athleisure look, especially with a fuzzy green fleece layered on top.
Everyone needs a go-to shirt—or shirt dress! Lean into the old-school prep trend but make it current with an easy polo dress or sweater styled over a striped button-down and cords. Add some interest with an eclectic beaded choker layered over a gold pendant or charm necklace.
When your family vibe is chill but you want to look put together, the sweater dress is your answer. Play into the holiday colors with a beautiful cashmere wrap, or opt for a school-girl chic look in a quilted mini and loafer combo no one will expect.
Whether you’re celebrating at the club or heading out to your ranch, some occasions call for a go-big-or-go home look. Choose a dress that’s the main entree, but style it your own way with a velvet blazer (hello, chic dinner vibes) or a western boot for practical wear outside.
style tip
“There’s a difference in wearing a piece and styling it,” says Shallon. “Don’t be afraid to add a belt or make outerwear part of the outfit with the belt on top.”
Besides the food and family, football is the best part of a weekend at home. Watching the game at a friend’s house? Channel Varsity Blues in a modern cardigan with cool metallic touches. And if you’re going to the tailgate (hello, rivalry weekend), get dressed in a winning number, like this suede shift styled with a puff-sleeve blouse and great leather boots.
